Senior Samantha Henderson from Louisiana High School was named the January female athlete for the 1st Annual MaxPreps High School Athlete of the Month Award, presented by the United States Marine Corps. Henderson plays softball, basketball, and runs track.
“MaxPreps congratulates Samantha on being named High School Athlete of the Month,” said Andy Beal, Founder and President of MaxPreps. "High school sports are designed to build character and foster teamwork and a competitive spirit in our nation's young people. The MaxPreps High School Athlete of the Month represents those outstanding qualities that make not just great athletes, but more importantly fine citizens. MaxPreps is proud to honor these fine student-athletes in collaboration with the United States Marine Corps.”
When asked about Henderson, Bill Capps, Henderson’s softball coach, said “Samantha is driven to succeed both on the field and in the classroom. She has maintained a perfect GPA while playing multiple sports for Louisiana High and playing an intense travel softball schedule. One of the first things Samantha told me when she started playing her freshman year was that she wanted to earn all conference each year she was in high school. Her work ethic throughout her time here helped her to achieve that goal.”
Henderson not only excels on the field and in the classroom, but she is also a leader among her peers and in the community. Henderson belongs to many groups and clubs at school, holding an office position in many of them. She volunteers thru Rotary Club, the American Red Cross, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Henderson also has a love for special needs kids. She demonstrates this by volunteering yearly as a helper for Special Olympics.
Henderson is a four-year starter at catcher for Louisiana High School. She is a four-time all-conference, and four-time all-district recipient. She was named to the Missouri Fastpitch Coaches Association All-State Academic Team for three years. Henderson will be attending Westminster University in the fall and play softball for them.
Staff Sergeant Donte Rabenell, of the Missouri United States Marine Corps presented Henderson with the MaxPreps Athlete of the Month trophy on Friday during a lunch assembly.
“The United States Marine Corps, through the MaxPreps High School Athlete of the Month program is committed to recognizing students that embody the fighting spirit which enables them to win battles and overcome challenges they face, both on and off the field. We’re proud to partner with MaxPreps in this powerful program showcasing student athletes that have a positive influence in their community” said Captain Sean Pangia.
MaxPreps picks one female and one male athlete each month to be named with the honor of High School Athlete of the Month, presented by the United States Marines Corps. MaxPreps sends out emails to all of their members of their site about nominating an athlete for the award. There are also links on MaxPreps.com for anyone to nominate a deserving athlete for this award. Nominations may be submitted by a coach, parent, peer, or teacher. MaxPreps then selects the most well-rounded athletes that match the qualities that are also found in the United States Marines Corps, like bravery, dedication, perseverance, personal sacrifice for others and being a positive influence in one’s community.
